It has become apparent that some Motorcoach operators have been taping over the internal camera of the event recorders. The event recorder is present for several reasons, these are:

• Protecting the operator from false accusations.
• Protecting the operator from inaccurate claims of responsibility for inattentive drivers.
• Protecting the company from frivolous claims.
• Documenting the events that may lead up to a collision or incident.

By obscuring the inward-facing camera on the event recorder, the liability of the company and driver increases greatly. If it becomes known that an operator is intentionally blocking the inward-facing camera on the event recorder, it is the obligation of the company to implement a corrective action plan with the operator. Please do not intentionally block the inward-facing camera on the event recorder device.

When operating a motorcoach, it is sometimes necessary to lower the sunscreen, which may unavoidably block the event recorder. This is a legitimate situation if the outside camera supports the need for sunshade use. If the sunshade is consistently lowered and the windshield wipers are active or the day is overcast, it would indicate that the operator was intentionally trying to block the inward-facing camera.
